The film is about Rita, a lawyer at a large firm who is more interested in getting criminals exonerated than bringing them to justice. One day, she gets an unexpected opportunity to leave when the notorious cartel leader Manitas del Monte hires her to help him retire from his business and realize a plan he has been secretly preparing for years: to become the woman he has always dreamed of being.
Emilia Pérez is already a sensation, garnering awards around the world. The film has been nominated for 207 awards and has won an impressive 81 so far, including Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival. The award went to Karla Sofía Gascón, alongside Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldana and Adriana Paz. In doing so, Karla Sofía Gascón made history as the first transgender actress to ever win this prestigious award. The film also dominated this year’s Oscar nominations with 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldana), Best Director (Jacques Audiard) and Best International Film.
